What is NuVuX?
NuVu is an innovative high school located in Cambridge, MA, founded by three MIT graduates as an alternative to the traditional classroom. There are no textbooks, no rote memorization, and no rigid subjects. Instead, students dive into hands-on, project-based “studios,” working in small teams to design and build real solutions to open-ended problems, the same way students do at the world's best architecture and design schools.
NuVuX KZ brings the NuVu studio model to Almaty in a convenient summer intensive format: a hands-on, project-based approach to learning, where students don't just study subjects — they design, build, and create. NuVuX KZ is the best of both worlds: students follow the exact curriculum used at NuVu in Cambridge, guided by instructors from the United States. So, if you can't travel all the way to Cambridge to experience a NuVu studio, you don't have to — come to Almaty this summer instead!
Meet Anya
Hi, I'm Anya Turovskiy — and I'm very excited to bring NuVuX to Almaty because I've seen, firsthand, what this kind of learning can do for a child.
I'm a mom of five, and I homeschooled all my kids, but not in the way you might imagine. We are unschoolers, which means that our learning is always project-based and design-centered, built around curiosity and making real things. So when my son Nikita (now 13) tried out a NuVu summer camp, I wasn't surprised that he fell in love with it. (His favorite studio? Ninja Warriors.) He loved it so much that he enrolled full-time, and today he's a ninth grader at NuVu High School in Cambridge.
I believe deeply in NuVu's design-centered approach, and I want more kids to experience it — which is exactly why I'm bringing this program to Kazakhstan. I'm originally from Russia. My family moved to the United States in 1992, and I've called Boston home ever since. But I have a deep love for Almaty. It's a vibrant city, always full of hope and open to new ideas.
Over the ten years I've worked with students from Central Asia, I've found them to be exceptionally bright, hardworking, and talented. Yet, when they sit down to apply to colleges and universities in the United States, something is often missing: the hands-on, project-based experience that the holistic admissions process requires. NuVuX KZ is my answer to that gap — a way to give these remarkable students the portfolio, the skills, and the stories they deserve.
